Is there a way to get water to flow reliably without getting an error? I like to find maps that have islands with the depressed tan colored areas, then dig a trench to the lake and let that fill. It worked the first time I did it, but now I get error exceptions when digging the final squares to the lake and nothing fills. It flows a couple squares into the channel, but never fills or rises.
I think I have some idea here. I tried various ways of connecting to the channel, and what seemed to work was digging out from the top down at the point where channel meets the lake. Instead of using the large mining tool, I used the single block tool and went down layer by layer until water flowed. No error. I’ll experiment with this more tomorrow.
The main rule with working with water right now is to do it “one step at a time” – dig out an area to fill, let it fill completely, and then open up the next area to fill. Trying to expand the reservoir while it’s already filling will cause errors and glitches; trying to fill a reservoir from both ends at once will cause the water to never settle properly.
So, the most reliable option is to dig out your area to fill (this includes channels to the water source) but leave a 1-block-wide solid barrier of natural blocks between the natural source and the filling channel. Then, knock out a single block at the bottom of that natural barrier and let the whole area fill. Once the water has stopped flowing it’s safe to go back and remove any other blocks from the barrier, since the water will flow to fill them immediately.
Good to know. I’ve had success digging a channel and then opening from the
top down at the point it hits the lake so far. I did run into one error
when two different bodies of water collided, but everything seems to be
fine.
