You’re a wizard, @malley.
That’s no tears. That’s liquid joy.
Seriously. The progress you’ve made in animations is crystal clear. While I can’t imagine how much time it took to get them that good, they are wonderful. Both eye anims and movements. While I’m slightly sad to lose some characteristic combat anims I’m used to, new ones bring tears to my eyes.
lol, You’re correct, its more of a cost issue. Maybe if we have some free time down the road… but honestly I would rather put that time into things like more bad guys or trees or bushes or something. Allie once drew a little thief man with a wolf head and a hood (so basically a gnoll or a wolfman) that I’ve had my eye on for a while. Just trying to find the time for everything : ).
My first thought when I saw the eye variances was “wally” (I don’t know if that is the correct spelling for the movie). Great work in the expressions, and fine tuning of the other animations. Gives a nice touch and atmosphere in looking more lively.
That sound fair enough, even though it contradicts other statements about focusing on perfecting current content over adding new? haha i guess the swamp goblin project just got yet another mountain to climb… Or a pool of sticky water to wade through
We don’t want to add new tech - new back end stuff. And while goblin eyes wouldn’t be new tech, it would be a lot of work for (what I believe would be) not much pay off. And I was trying to make the case that that same time could be spent to make other things with much larger impact : ). There are better examples of even more important things - like getting the rest of the kickstarter pets working, or making our town progression more interesting. I just jumped strait to ‘fun things’ that could be done with extra time : ). Unfortunately making eyes for the goblins is significantly more problematic than it was for hearthlings unless we changed how goblins look. Currently I am of the opinion that the goblins look pretty cute and I don’t want to take anything away from them, even if that means they won’t gain the benefits of eye animations. That may change in the future, but I think it will be a ways out if it does.
I think that the happy eyes look a bit weird. It feels more like the hearthling is distressed. I mean, in the title picture of this post, she appears to have severe back pain and/or is really exhausted and the squirrel loves it. Why not have the happy smiley face eyes? ˄_˄
Just a random thought: maybe give them eyebrows then? Their “inlaid” eyes are indeed a unique feature which I would keep untouched.
Another feedback: Lings squint their eyes in a very odd manner, I don’t think they should get diagonal (maybe not that diagonal, 5 degrees would do, right now it’s like 30 degrees) while they do so.
A technical question: how are the vanilla in-game animations made? I know there is an unofficial Blender add-on but the workflow is a bit complicated and I personally do not like Blender at all (it’s the most messy modelling tool ever made). As long as I have .edu e-mail address provided by my university I can get academic licences for many commercial modellers and I would appreciate a more convenient way to work with animations for my mods. Some static objects would actually benefit a lot from being animated, take this lovely palm from Google Image Search for example:
