Crafting/ Items/ Customisation

That’s a great idea which we want to support, but it’s a pebble… it’s the kinda thing where if we don’t have it you’d miss it, but you’re not going to be really pissed off, and then when it comes in you get happy. So eventually we will support that, but it’s not high on the list.

First of all when you embark you will be able to customize everyone before you start the game. The game will randomly generate all you settlers and if you don’t like them you can change their names, you can change their genders, and you can change the way they look, and then once in game you will be able to craft gear for your military units, like leather armour or particular weapons and maybe you’ll be able to craft some gear for your crafters to make them unique or give them crafting buffs.

"Crafting is going to all about managing your resources. For example, let’s look at the Carpenter:
Right from the get-go, the Carpenter can craft furniture, wooden swords that let you upgrade people into soldiers, and wooden irrigation pipes that will up the productivity of your farms. So there’s lots of stuff you COULD craft, but you’re limited by the amount of wood you can chop down and more importantly your Carpenter’s time.

So you have to choose, what’s most important? Shelter, army, or food? The answer will depend on what’s going on in your game at the moment and what your long term goals are.
And we will have interdependence between the crafters. The blacksmith will need help from the mason to craft his forge, etc."

"We haven’t talked about that … I would say no, because that to me is kinda ‘busy work’, it’s something you have to have in your head where you’re thinking “oh, I need to have some spare tools in case one breaks”, it doesn’t seem fun to me personally."

“It’s a good question, but it’s kinda tricky because … you can differentiate between units because of their clothing … if you can just screw around with the colours as much as you want you will lose that. Now it’s not a case of we won’t allow you to do it, it’s just that we don’t want you to be able to shoot yourself in the foot and forget what your units are because you’ve altered the class colours. If we did allow you to do it, you would likely have ito devote some time and resources into it.”

“We want your settlers to have relationships: to fall in love, mourn each other when they die, etc. Kids are tough. We’re not sure how to model kids moving from infant through childhood to adulthood. Maybe we can do something simple like have an infant to pow instantly “levels up” to a little kid then bam later becomes a full grown adult. We’ll keep thinking about it.”

“Yer, that was the idea behind the lagomorphs … you should be able to trade with NPCs, friendly and perhaps not so friendly … people will interact with your city, sometimes to tear it down, sometimes to barter with you, sometimes to demand tribute … and you should be able to interact with the civilizations around you.”

We thought about that … adding an in-game voxel editor is a big chunk of work, it would be awesome, but its like not worth it yet … eventually maybe, but for now we’re not gonna do that, but it’s a good idea. We even thought about how to level up the carver so that when he levels up you can do more intricate carvings, but if it makes it in, it’s something that will be there later rather than sooner.

That’s a great idea; I would love to see that. What I really hope is that once we release dwarves, is that they’ll be enough of an example of how to [make a race] that a group of ambitious modders will make another race.

Once we have the other races probably ye, but that’s way down the line. I was talking earlier about how it would be cool if you were playing human and ran into the dwarves and you could bribe some dwarves to either to work through the season to craft some dwarf stuff or maybe even join your town if you’re really nice to them.

"The pets are like their own little characters that will wander around, play, etc. We’re going to try allowing all the pets at once and see how that goes.
One of our early stretch goals was a baby mammoth pet for all KS backers. I think we’re more or less done with pets now. We have a good variety and don’t want to overdo it."

Which is like pay to win which is not cool in my book. And the game would have to be balanced around sometimes you have these exclusive pets and sometimes you don’t which is tricky.”

Combat


  • Will there be a mode without combat?

“Yes! When you start a game you will be able to choose whether you want to include monsters on the world. So if you just want to zen out and focus on the town-building aspects without having to worry about some giant red monster stomping on your sand-castles, you can totally do that.”

"*For combat, you’ll be able to customize your army through class and gear. Your unit’s class will determine most of its abilities, and we’ll have all the archetypes represented: tank, melee nuker, ranged nuker, healer, etc.

Then each unit’s gear will determine some passive bonuses, and occasionally grant new abilities. For instance, you may decide that you want a strong defensive front line, so you promote 10 footmen and just 2 archers as the main damage dealers behind them, but you can choose to arm those footmen with swords, which do extra damage, or maces, which have a chance to stun on hit.

Of course, all of this is just an example of the kind of feel we’re going for. Exact mechanics are subject to change."*

“Probably not, whatever abilities they have we want them to be non-unique, the pets themselves are unique … What we don’t want it to be like, because you did the kickstarter – you have a gameplay advantage that no one else can take advantage of. So, if they have combat abilities they will be non-unique.”

We don’t have a great feel for it yet, hundreds is too big, dozens maybe? We are thinking that a city, a big city, would have 50-100 people. Beyond the hundred people it starts to get kinda crazy, we want you to be able to recognize people on sight and say: “oh ya there’s Merv Buryhands he’s my worker that I promoted to a carpenter and is now a Master Carver,” so that kinda puts a cap on it.

Yea, I can see how it could be useful as a combat unit. [The geomancer] could cause a split in the earth in front of a group of potential invaders. Will she have combat spells? Probably not, the spirit behind her is that she is boost to your domestic side. She crafts golems to boost your productivity and she helps clear earth much more quickly then you could without her. She is not designed to be a combat unit but you can imagine her as a support unit helping with defense.

We like the way scaffolding works. If you start to try and model things with one guy stays up on the scaffolding and you start handing bricks off between people the AI gets a lot more complicated and really all it does is make building more efficient, but there are easier ways to make building more efficient if we determine building takes too long. We could make people walk 5% faster or right now a single log can make five bricks we could change that to seven bricks and now building is more efficient. … We want to make it cool but eventually you are wasting time making the game 1% cooler.

Modding


  • “Modding tools looking strong. Are they that strong that the community could even create a sci-fi Version of the Game?”

    " All the major game features like building, farming, the classes, AIs, etc are built and ship as “mods” that we just happened to write. So modding will be VERY powerful. It would be a huge effort to do a total conversion to sci-fi or whatever, but it will be possible".

  • Can we start modding with the Beta?

“Yes, modding support will be there right from the start of the beta. It’s so baked into the game that honestly it would be hard to turn it off. The fancy editors will be a little immature, but if you don’t mind rolling up your sleeves and writing some LUA and JSON, you’ll be able to write mods yourself from day 1.”

  • Are they primarily aesthetic items & stats or is there a scripting component?

There’s definitely scripting. We’re trying to build as many gameplay systems as possible using our own modding tools. Ideally, anything you see in the game you can replicate and put your own twist on using the modding tools. So you can add your own item, give it a cool animation, and make it do something unique with scripts. Want a pair of magic boots that make your worker run 3x as fast? No problem!

  • Can I add a new item in a mod? What is moddable?

*"Yes, you can make a new item as a mod. We’re working very hard to make everything as moddable as possible. Basically we’re writing all of the game systems and content using the same tools that we will make available to you guys as modders. Here are some of the things you can do in a mod:

  • Make new items
  • Add new monsters
  • Add new classes and abilities
  • Add new RPG-like scripted adventures
  • Reskin or add to the UI
  • Tweak the AI of your settlers or the monsters"

  • Can we, besides creating custom items, also create a custom supply chain? For example - Custom armour made from Giant beetles which will need to be hunted and then processed?

“Yes, that was one of our first design goals for the crafting system. In fact, the trees you see in the concept video, the wood they generate, and the fact that wood is a raw material to make the house are all driven by the mod system. Making items which require beetle carapaces which must be looted from giant beetles you’ve slain in the field (or even harvested from the exoskeletons your pet beetles have outgrown) is definitely possible.”

  • What’s the art process?

“We use Qubicle for all the voxel art. Stonehearth comsumes .qb files natively and our resource file format is just JSON, so it’s really easy to get new art assets into the game. We’re using 3DSMax for rigging and animation, but the animation file format is, again, just JSON.”

"I [Tom] use the Master Edition of this program, because I need to export data both to get the model into Stonehearth and to animate using 3DS Max. The Master Edition is $79. Apparently at some point I said that you could use the free version of the program to make mods for Stonehearth, but if I did that is NOT correct. You can use the free version to play around with voxels, but the free version does not support exporting data."
We are in the very early stages of defining tools, and will let you know more when we’ve nailed down some plans. We would like to find a way for you to use Qubicle Constructor, maybe with a special Stonehearth edition. Such a program would probably not be free, since the people at minddesk need to eat too!

“I [Tom] use 3DS Max to animate. That is a very expensive program. I can tell you 100% that we will not require 3DS Max for animation! Our animations are stored in simple text files in a very straight-forward file format. It should be very easy for someone familiar with an open-source tool like Blender to write a script that exports Stonehearth animations.”

  • Will there be a World editor at some point?

“No world editor out of the box, but it would be possible to write one if someone was super ambitious”

“That’s a very good question … we don’t know, that’s very hard for a lot of reasons … we don’t wanna take advantage of anyone, or make anyone feel that way, It’s so early it’s hard to say.”

“The idea is that … the way that we handle variations is that we layer on changes, so there’s a file that says ‘this is what it means to be a person’, and it’s just the name of all the matrices, and that’s the base definition. Now we can enhance that, by saying that, for this piece use one of these things, so use either head 1,2,3 or 4. And you can do that either in the datafile, or through the script. So if that means if you want to add a mod that’s 50 different heads, then that’s easy for you to do that … this is more than just heads of course, it goes for all body parts.”

“We have two things that seem to compete, one is that we want RPG like adventuring elements, but the other is that it’s a city building game … we do want the focus of the game to be you building your city, so the action is focussed there, but at the same time want story driven things. The way we will handle that is …a lot of the story driven mods, not all but a lot, will be about stuff that happens to your town … you can imagine a plague, a zombie invasion, a goblin invasion party, they’re a bit dramatic examples, but also things like a caravan. That way it focusses on your city and allows us a lot of room for story telling.”

“We’re gonna have some sort of built-in functionality to highlight mods which are particularly awesome to install them, but keeping some sort of mod marketplace with things you’d expect with ratings, reviews, etc … whatever we’ll do it will work as well for none-steam customers.”

Yes! The modding tools you are getting are literally the tools we used to make the entire game. So if you want to go in, and I mean like really go in, and make something super complicated and extensive, like a total conversion where people are settling on the moon and you have to build moon buggies and spacesuits and you have to mine gas, you can. It’s going to be a ton of work but you can do it … Now there is a tiny bit of difference; you won’t have access to the engine source, but the engine is as small as we can possible make it. It handles tasks like rendering to the screen, handling keystrokes and mouse input, and pathfinding. However we give you access to the pathfinder in Lua. You could say here’s this piece of wood now make a path to it.

“You will probably be able to change the size of the GUI. Definitely make it smaller, make it bigger, maybe. We’ll think about it”

We will have some system to sync up the mods between you and the server so you don’t have to manage them manually."

That’s tricky, there will be biome specific critters and animals, and you will be more likely to encounter goblins in foothills and forests than the river delta, but we don’t want to go too overboard because we don’t want to mask off a large percentage of the content based on where you chose to settle.

  • How large can the worlds potentially be? Is there a planned limit or will it be open ended?

“The world is procedurally generated, so it’s theoretically of way larger than you could explore. There might be good game play reasons to stay close to your town, though. We’ll find a good balance when we do beta testing”

“Yes exactly, firstly you’ll be able to alter the terrain with your workers, they’ll be able to like dig ditches and build hills but they’re just ordinary humans so they won’t be able to build mountains. The idea behind the geomancer is that it’s a sort of amplifier for your workers and their ability to change the world, ‘she’ can raise entire pillars of earth or make sinkholes … the other thing she can do is make earthern golems to replace/supplement your workers.”

Yea, rain affecting crops is something that is easy, obvious and works great. The fun for us in our simulations is: we setup the rules, you learn rules, you develop a system that is totally awesome and then we knock over your sandcastle with a random event and you have to react. Rain or drought is the kind of thing that is like well I thought I was master of the universe but now there’s this drought so how do I react.

We haven’t nailed down the final mechanic yet, but we want there to be a constant choice between burning resources to craft things (buildings, weapons, armor, etc.) and investing in the food supply (farming, trapping) to get more people.”

*We would like to add subterranean exploration eventually, but we’re concentrating on the above-ground game first.
We can tune the amount of supplies vs. materials in the ground pretty easily. For instance, with wood we’ve determined that 1 “block” of wood lets you build 5 blocks of wooden wall, so you don’t have to chop down every tree in the forest to build a handful of houses.
The world will be based on reality, meaning if there’s an outcropping of rock, that outcropping will extend into the ground.

We want the underground to have a similar density, where you don’t have to dig very far before running into something interesting, even if it’s just some fluorescent plants in a subterranean cave or whatever.”

  • How much do I have to micro food and water supply?

“In general there is no micro in Stonehearth. Combat will have some micro, but that’s pretty much it. When it comes to food and water supply, you will manage the systems that generate food and water, and your settlers will figure out how to implement your plans. For instance, for farming, you will decide where to place the farms and what crops to plant, then design things like irrigation systems, etc. Your farmers will hoe the fields, harvest the crops, and store them all by themselves.”

  • Will there be a diversity of resources to gather and mine to attain different looks? ie: varieties of stone and ore, different tree species, etc.

“There will be a variety of resources which provide both cosmetic and functional differences to your structures. If you look carefully in the trailer, you’ll see at least 3 distinct different species of trees. Maybe a wall made of ironwood is better at holding off a pack of invading goblins than one made of oak.”

“Re water: We’re working on it! Water is…hard. There will certainly be water in the game, and we want it to behave in water like way, with flow, dams, etc.”

"The way that we think about an empire in the short term or at least in first release is with this connected mode, the connected mode is something that is exciting to us and we would like to do it eventually.

The idea is that you manage a city but you and your friends or you and your clan are an empire and each one of you can a have a role in that empire. You could be the farming city that provides food for the rest of the empire, or you could be the outpost that’s more defense based. There will be real consequences for how you manage your empire like maybe even waging war on other empires, but this is in the far flung future. It’s fun to talk about, but our focus is on the first release of the game."

Because this represents for us the first viable game, that is the first cut of what we want the game to be. What we’re saying is as soon as we have something mature enough to show the building and crafting and core features we’re going to put it out, that’s called the beta. So by definition it is the first best thing we can put out. Now would we produce something that is incomplete and call it alpha and release it? We could but it would be a distraction. No matter what anyone says when you put out a release it costs something because you fix bugs that you wouldn’t normally fix that soon because they’re just annoying little things. We don’t want to distract ourselves from the real goal which is getting that beta out as quickly as possible.
