A way for our little male voxel people to grow manly beards and mustaches during their lifetimes
A new class, the barber, with it’s own unique service: to provide your little and now hairy voxel people with an adequate haircut
How:
After several days of life (from 30 to 60) our males would show signs of facial hair. No they haven’t contracted lycanthropy and they won’t be howling during the full moon. They’re just showing signs of the first of 3 steps:
First step would be a thin layer of facial hair, which would appear
after 30 to 60 days of life (not definitive though, not all man have
facial hair)
Second step would give them a respectable beard or mustache 30 to 60
days after the facial hair (again, not definitive)
The small group who were lucky to pass trough step 1 and step 2
could (not definitively) reach step 3, where their beards and
mustaches would grow to impressive sizes
All 3 kingdoms people will raise their own kinds of beards and mustaches based on their culture. Dwarfs are an exception as I believe they all will have impressive beards.
The barber would be a new class which could be accessed by making it’s tool (scissors) with the respective crafter (?) and giving the promotion to someone. You would then have to select your new barber and choose a place to put his chair where the magic will happen.
The barber chair gives you the options to:
Don’t cut any facial hair
Cut all facial hair
Cut medium and big sized facial hair
Cut only big sized facial hair
All idle non-combatants and combatants near an active barber shop not set to don’t cut facial hair will attempt to have their facial hair cut if there isn’t another person using the chair and if they have enough facial hair to fit the options set in the barber shop.
There is no barber class for the dwarfs.
Why
It’s not essential. It won’t win you wars, it won’t rescue girls in towers, it won’t kill Cthulu, but this, at first glance, pointless feature, can bring much joy. The best things are made by the smallest details.
The rest of it is a good idea, but there’s quite a flaw with the barber class; it just wastes your resources. You have to get rid of a useful worker who could potentially become a craftsman of some sort and pay resources crafting scissors for the sakes of aesthetics? Maybe in some games this would be considered perfectly viable but I’m pretty sure Radiant want gameplay reasons for everything. Sure this could be modded, but there lacks an incentive for the user to bother with him for the sake of losing a worker and crafting scissors (admittedly these probably won’t cost much resources and are really not a big deal, but metal could be rare, we’re a bit on the dark about that).
Perhaps the barber could do something else as well? Or a different class could cover for the barber so you didn’t need him at all? I just feel it could do with a solid gameplay reason to acquire him.

Totally
This is a game, not all choices and options must be crucial options. Some can be silly, some can come from pure vanity, some can come from how we see our kingdom like. I for one want to raise a horde of heavily bearded hillmen
Also, I think you can get quite a lot of workers, but even then barber is an option you have. And if you still don’t want to have him, remember: beards can protect from winter and make you look meaner (some). Have a grand nice day
Oh my god, I totally not saw your last paragraph, I’m sorry very sorry
I like that you could give him more functionality. I think giving him more reasons to be other than to cut hair would be awesome and make up for the time he spends waiting for other men hair to grow
In the olden days of yore (ie, from the 19th century going back to the middle ages), Barbers also often doubled as ad-hoc doctors/dentists (even surgeons!). So maybe the Barber could be a base level healing class in addition to allowing hair to be trimmed?
Edit: I like this idea so much I might mod it in if Radiant doesn’t include it.
