Generals, Warlords, And Kings - Custom Commanders

As seen from the title of this post, I’m interested in whether or not I can play this game from a streamlined RTS/RPG perspective, one character or character’s family tree. While it is beneficial to be able to have direct control over an entire village, have to manually select every character to form a party to either farm or fight can seem pretty exhausting. Would it be possible to put the town on autopilot expansion, freeing your micro activity to military focus and armament, and then to designate a selected character from the town as leader, or will a leader unit be provided from the beginning? Or even classed differently from the normal peasants? And will the User Interface be different for building or combat, with global, local, or specific commands to individuals or groups?
