# Game won't start \[Steam\]

**Summary:**  
When I try to launch the game, a black box opens, and doesn’t load, whelp! I reinstalled, validated files, disables all the mods… No luck!

Hi!  
so if i get you right the game just flashes a black box and then dissapears without a trace and nothing happens right? could you try unhooking all non-needed usb-things from your pc? (so things like webcams etc. just keep keyboard and mouse) that worked for me what i had a simmilar issue.

Hye!

It just shows up a black box, and it loads the stonehearth mouse cursor. It doesnt to anything else. I only have 2 USB things in my pc, a mouse and a keyboard.

You mentioned that you disabled all the mods. That makes me assume that the game worked before, since you installed mods. What changes have been made to the system between the last time the game ran successfully and when it started to fail?

Bought new antivirus, from norton Security to Norton 360. I disabled it but no lock there.

Anti-virus programs are notorious for causing this sort of random crashes. Since the game hasn’t been updated in a year, that seems to be the likely cause. Disabling it should have been enough, but can you try excluding the game folder from its blocking and reinstalling?

Well, without a `crash.dmp` and with nothing unusual in the log, the game process is most likely being killed by another program, be it an antivirus or something else. There’s little else I can help with there without more info. The Windows Event Log could have some details, I suppose, but it has a lot of noise most of the time so you might have some trouble finding entries that relate specifically to Stonehearth.

Also slightly unrelated but using Norton as an antivirus, ouch. I concider Norton a virus all of its own…

If the game crashes by itself, it will generate a `crash.dmp` file in the same folder as the log (it may appear as just `crash` if you have Windows hiding file extensions). If something else kills it, there won’t be a crash.dmp.

Windows Defender that comes with Windows 10 for FREE is really good these days against viruses and also very low performance impact. buying extra anti-virus software is not a need

True that, but aith norton I can protect all my 5 devices with backup, VPN, cloud storage. And since I have android divices aswell, Norton is quite a nice program.
