[Dev Blog] Desktop Tuesday. More UI work, plus women!

It’s not only the ham icon that breaks the pattern. It’s also the ore, gem, bread, banner, bear, pelt, beer, sword, bow, armour, and staff icons, even the chair has a curved top. The problem with the apple is it has shading as if it was round but the borders don’t match that image, it can draw attention to itself by being internally inconsistent.

Look closely, the only things on there that are squarical but not in real life are the log and the thread, and I’m sure you could use square cotten reels even if it could cause issues. Things like the mug and coins exist even if not common, there is barely a precedent for a square apple but lots for a round one.

I personally don’t view the pattern as being so formulaic that everything must be boxed or squared as much as artistically possible.

Obviously if we compare things to the log, and the thread, which fall into that “boxy” category then yes they are inconsistent. But to me there are seemingly a lot of consistencies between the icons in terms of straight lines and edges. Okay yes there are some curves in there, but for the most part I think a nice balance has been struck between the two whilst maintaining that ability to easily interpret what an icon means.

You don’t want to go too far one way and risk it all looking a bit ridiculous.

agreed… at the end of the day, when i take in all the icons at once, they all clearly belong to the same universe… they all have the same basic artistic vibe…

For me at least if you guys can tell its an apple then job done. The only comment i saw that was an initial worry was the leather under tools and goods someone had to explain what it was. I knew but i watched the vid. Don’t forget at the end of the day its just an image and i am assuming that to change it would just be a simple image swap.

@Xavion, @voxel_pirate, and anyone who says the :apple: is not a good apple then @Tom’s quote of the day from the berry stream “this is stonehearth, we can make any kind of fruit we want” (para-phrased)
so I to, with @SteveAdamo and @Geoffers747 it looks good
