  • Will there be a mode without combat?

“Yes! When you start a game you will be able to choose whether you want to include monsters on the world. So if you just want to zen out and focus on the town-building aspects without having to worry about some giant red monster stomping on your sand-castles, you can totally do that.”

"*For combat, you’ll be able to customize your army through class and gear. Your unit’s class will determine most of its abilities, and we’ll have all the archetypes represented: tank, melee nuker, ranged nuker, healer, etc.

Then each unit’s gear will determine some passive bonuses, and occasionally grant new abilities. For instance, you may decide that you want a strong defensive front line, so you promote 10 footmen and just 2 archers as the main damage dealers behind them, but you can choose to arm those footmen with swords, which do extra damage, or maces, which have a chance to stun on hit.

Of course, all of this is just an example of the kind of feel we’re going for. Exact mechanics are subject to change."*

“Probably not, whatever abilities they have we want them to be non-unique, the pets themselves are unique … What we don’t want it to be like, because you did the kickstarter – you have a gameplay advantage that no one else can take advantage of. So, if they have combat abilities they will be non-unique.”

We don’t have a great feel for it yet, hundreds is too big, dozens maybe? We are thinking that a city, a big city, would have 50-100 people. Beyond the hundred people it starts to get kinda crazy, we want you to be able to recognize people on sight and say: “oh ya there’s Merv Buryhands he’s my worker that I promoted to a carpenter and is now a Master Carver,” so that kinda puts a cap on it.

Yea, I can see how it could be useful as a combat unit. [The geomancer] could cause a split in the earth in front of a group of potential invaders. Will she have combat spells? Probably not, the spirit behind her is that she is boost to your domestic side. She crafts golems to boost your productivity and she helps clear earth much more quickly then you could without her. She is not designed to be a combat unit but you can imagine her as a support unit helping with defense.

Sounds cool, but they would have to be defensive because in the initial version of the game the odds of you going out to another city and sieging it are not necessarily super high because again we want the focus to be on your town.
